Washington Crossing State Park-Open Air Theatre 609-737-1826
Washington Crossing State Park 609-737-0623 Titusville This was the site of probably the single, most important offensive in Washington's military career. On the night of December 25, 1976, he ordered 3 divisions of troops to attack the Hessian garrison at Trenton. The plan called for each division to cross the Delaware at different points and then converge on the enemy by surprise. Washington himself and 2,400 men crossed the river in ferryboats at the site of the present-day park. After a difficult crossing in the ice-chocked river, he and his men marched South to Trenton, caught the Hessians by surprise, and won the victory. The other two divisions never made the crossing that night due to river ice. Washington immediately followed-up the victory with a successful attack on the British at Princeton.

First it was in wooden ships that took six weeks to make the voyage and left everyone sick. Later it was the steamship lines who filled up their steerage section with poor immigrants. If the immigrants were turned back because of sickness or other reasons, the steamship company had to pay for the return passage. Newspaper cartoons depict the rising tide of intolerance against the newcomers which finally culminated in a restrictive law in 1924. Ellis Island was closed in 1954.
