Flemington
Junction
Raritan Township This area is located northeasterly of the Borough of Flemington near the South Branch of Raritan River getting its name because it was a station of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. In 1881, it promised to "become in time quite a settlement." (Snell:307). -Compiled by Phyllis B. D'Autrechy of the H.C. Cultural & Heritage Commission- (1992)-Flemington, New Jersey |

| Industry
and Commerce
"Keep
thy shop, and thy shop will keep thee"
Ben Franklin - As years passed, specilization of labor and trade began with general stores, grain and woolen mills, tanneries and many types of artisan shops. These little centers of trade existed mostly for local commerce but with the coming of rail service about a century ago a more expansive type industry developed. Flemington Cut Glass opened its doors in 1907 by Al Muller, grandfather of bank director George Muller along with Charles McMullen. In 1913 was employing 70 people. It is the oldest manufacturer of glassware in the United States today. Flemington and some of the other towns of the county built locally-owned power plants in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Later, these were taken over by the Jersey Central Power and Light Co. Turntable Junction's Liberty Village, founded in 1972, employed a range of craft people from gunsmith to weaver-spinner in an 18th Century setting. Potters and many other craftsmen are finding Hunterdon an advantageous location for work and market. An important early industry of Flemington was the Fulper Pottery, and some of its old kilns are kept today as a non-working reminder at the sales rooms of Stangl Pottery near Turntable Junction. -- |

Inc. plant in Raritan Township, processor and packager of "instant"
foods-clean industry in a rural setting. A New Era in Hunterdon's social
progress was marked by the opening of the Hunterdon Medical Center in
July 1953. New industries are finding it profitable to locate in Hunterdon.
Riegel Paper Corporation's Mill at Milford, is the largest of 4 in Hunterdon
and Warren county. - Flemington
became widely known in the early 20th century for
the manufacture of pottery and cut glass; one
glass company continues to operate.
